Farm to Pet makes it easy with our Turkey Feast value bag of healthy turkey treats for dogs and cats! And it’s not just the harvest design that makes it perfect for including our furry friends in the Thanksgiving festivities – it’s the low-fat, low-allergen pet treats inside. Unlike human turkey with all the trimmings, our single-ingredient Turkey Chips healthy pet treats contain none of the added fats, salt, flavorings, and seasonings that can upset fur baby tummies.
Read on for the many benefits of turkey for dogs and cats and whether they should partake in the family’s Thanksgiving turkey. You’ll also learn about our special-edition Turkey Feast and all of the single-ingredient turkey treats, including turkey chips, turkey dog food topper, and Turkey Crumbles turkey treats for cats, from Farm to Pet that pets can enjoy at Thanksgiving and all year long.
Turkey is a wonderful poultry option for dogs and cats for many reasons, but more on that topic shortly. However, when we prepare turkey “human-style,” it becomes another story altogether. Adding butter and oils may give the flavor and moisture we love, but it’s added fat and calories, too – especially for animals. Cats and dogs thrive on unprocessed foods – it’s what their bodies are made to run on. In addition, dogs and cats have a much lower tolerance for salt than humans, and too much can actually be dangerous for them. Possibly most important to note is that onions and garlic are toxic to both dogs and cats. This is why it’s so critical to stick with unseasoned meat and poultry for pets - Grandma’s famous recipe for roast turkey is for humans only!
Turkey is literally stuffed with benefits for dogs! Minimally processed dog treats made of single ingredient turkey are a great choice for a nutritious dog snack. Turkey, especially skinless breast meat, is naturally low in fat and high in protein and nutrients. Specifically, turkey meat is an excellent source of zinc, niacin, magnesium, potassium and B vitamins. These essential nutrients offer a plethora of pet health benefits, including promoting healthy energy and metabolic levels, heart and muscle function, well-conditioned coat and skin, and even immune response and blood sugar regulation.
Turkey is also easily digestible to the canine digestive system, making is an ideal choice for dogs with sensitive stomachs. Plus, turkey is considered a “novel protein,” meaning it is less likely to be found in dog foods and treats. Because of this reduced exposure, novel proteins are less likely to cause food sensitivity and allergic reactions than more commonly used proteins, making turkey treats an excellent alternative for dogs sensitive or allergic to chicken or beef.
While many of the above benefits of turkey treats carry over to cats, there are a few things that can make turkey even more beneficial to feline fur babies. While pet food allergies and sensitivities are far less common in cats than dogs, cats can still have tummy troubles, and turkey is mild on their digestive systems as well. In addition, protein is even more important to a cat’s diet than a dog’s, with cat’s requiring more than twice the protein than their canine counterparts (typically about 26% versus 12%). As such, grain-free cat treats made with one protein are ideal for cats. Lastly, turkey is rich in the essential amino acid taurine, which is critical for feline eye, heart, and brain function. Essential amino acids have to come from food, and with the highest taurine content of any land animal, grain-free single-ingredient turkey treats like ours make a great source.
