Recent study shows that 48 Million households in the US have dogs as their pets. So why are dogs the one of the most common pets? Veterinarians in Charlottesville, VA, discussed in the Sept 2021 issue of Autumn Trails Veterinary Center the reasons why dogs are the most popular pet:

Dogs are Good for Stress Management

Stress is everywhere and we can experience it anytime and any day. That is why having a pet is beneficial for stressed people. Now, our dogs have this "Calming effect" to us humans, that even a simple cuddle from them make us feel relax. Dogs help enhance the levels of our "oxytocin", which is a feel-good hormone that gives us positive feelings. Dogs also reduce the production of cortisol, a stress-related hormone. High levels of cortisol have been linked to more stress and frustration.

Dogs Gel in With Our Everyday Routine

Dogs naturally can acclimate and integrate into their owners' routines. They accompany us while we engage in all of our favorite pastimes and activities. You can go on a run with them, have a lengthy car ride, or simply cuddle up next to them on the couch. They are able to read your owner's emotions and are prepared for everything. They don't argue with you and are available for anything at any moment, unlike other companions.

Dogs help us Sleep Better

Every dog has an innate desire to defend its owner. Owners can sleep sounder and more calmly knowing that their dog can effectively fend off intruders. Dogs are also excellent cuddlers, and resting close to one provides their owners a sense of safety and comfort.

Dogs Improve Quality of Life

Owning a dog has positive effects on your body, mind, and emotions. Loneliness, isolation, and depression respond well to dogs. They help us develop a sense of accountability and discipline. In other words, dogs improve our lives by adding purpose, activity, and emotional satisfaction.
